The Federal Government on Friday announced that it was currently reaching out to the United States and other members of the World Trade Organisation to clear the hampering of the emergence of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, as Director-General of the WTO.

This was revealed on Friday by The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Mariam Katagum, who is also  the Chairperson of the Campaign Strategy Team for Okonjo-Iweala.

Okonjo-Iweala had secured 163 of the 164 members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and was on the way to being declared the new Director General of the trade organisation on Wednesday, but saw a lone opposition in the form of the US.

However, Katagum and her team has met to review and strategise on the way forward in the light of recent developments in the selection process for the appointment of a DG for the trade organisation.

According to her (Katagum) Nigeria was persuading the US to adopt Okonjo-Iweala as WTO director-general following the overwhelming support the Nigerian candidate had garnered from member countries.

Katagum said: “Nigeria is currently reaching out to all members of the WTO including the United States of America and South Korea to overcome the impasse as well as persuade the US to join the consensus in adopting the recommendation of Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala as DG-WTO.”
