It is often said that history will judge one for not profferring solution at all than profferring a wrong solution. I make bold to say that certain solution are so abysmal to the extent that it’s not a solution at all.
In 2019, Nigeria’s population is estimated at 201 million with about 2.1million workforce at the federal level according to the office of Personnel Management. How His Excellency Sen Bola Tinubu recommended the recruitment of 50million Nigerian youths into security agencies as a way of tackling both unemployment and insecurity challenges we are facing appears to be creating more problems than solutions.
Is Jagaban unaware that the federal government sometimes borrow money to pay salaries of her workforce?. 50million represent 1/4 of our entire population. Where will the government get the money to pay salaries of these men, take care of their training including kitting not to talk about provision of modern equipment to fight criminality.
Our security agents remains one of the world’s poorly funded and ill motivated. Only recently, one commander of our troops cried out for lack of equipment to fight to fight boko haram, he only got a bloody nose..court marshal. How did Ashuwaju came to conclusion that numerical strength without more is a silver bullet to our lingering security problems.
Lets take a trip to other countries with similar security challenges and see the numerical strength of their security forces. As at 2019, Syria with a population of 17.07 million had 142,000 active Security Personnel
Israel with an estimated population of 16, 244,513 in 2019 has 169, 500 including 102, 500 that were conscripted and 465,000 reserve.
In the same year 2019, the Israeli defence budget stood at $20,5 billion.
Even war in gulf code name Operation Desert Storm that saw many countries coming together to form coalition did not have more than population of so many countries put together to prosecute.
Chad, our next door neighbour did not need the size of security workforce recommendded by Tinubu before their President Idris Derby led an onslaught against the insurgents into Nigeria territory.

I wouldn’t have laboured to put up this piece but doing so is expedient as the man who made the astonishing recommendations may be our next C-in-C. If a person in that calibre can make such recommendations then we don’t have any justification in criticising President Buhari’s approach to unemployment and insecurity. Not forgetting that these are the people that branded Jonathan clueless and kindergarten President.
Incase, Jagaban does not know, many countries now use technology in form of drones to fight criminality with less emphasis on human beings.
The solution is simple, revamp our ailing industries through bailout, create enabling environment for foreign investors to come and invest; equip our security agents to fight criminality with renewed political will and above all sincerity of purpose. Jagaban please takenote of these solutions. Thanks
