The United Action For Change, UAC, a not-for-profit organization playing a pivotal role in birthing a new socio-political order in Nigeria, has thrown its weight behind the ongoing #EndSARS protests. The group promises to provide free legal services to arrested protesters in the course of the ongoing demonstrations.
In a statement issued in Lagos by its Acting National Publicity Secretary, Enitan Olukotun and General Secretary, Michael Popoola Ajayi, the group hailed the courage of the youth in organizing themselves and in unison demanding system change in the country.
The group, whose convener is the renowned rights activist and lawyer, Dr. Muiz Banire, SAN also charges Nigerian youths to institutionalize the historic struggle by creating structures to sustain the gains and birth the new Nigeria of their dream.
The group said, “We have taken more than a passing interest in the unprecedented, historic #EndSARS and #EndPoliceBrutality movement. The campaign has expanded beyond the scope of security forces’ abuse of power and killings to include demands for good governance, true federalism, employment opportunities, adequate security and end to corruption among others.
The legitimate demands and agitations of these young folks resonate with the agenda of the UAC and so we are totally aligned with these patriotic demands and also promise to support them with free legal services and other areas within our capacity.”
The group further stated:
“We are also demanding that the outrageous and immoral jumbo pension scheme for former governors and their deputies should end forthwith. It smacks of insensitivity and cruelty by those providence favoured to be elected as leaders and catered for by public sweat throughout their tenure to become eternal burdens to the people amidst excruciating poverty in the country.”
The group is also pressing for drastic reductions in the cost of governance across board. “We demand an end to humongous take home pay and satanic emoluments being expropriation by the federal lawmakers and, therefore, request that Senators and their counterparts in the Federal House of Representatives and all political office holders should be placed on Civil Service Salary Scale.”
