The Lagos State Government has revived its campaign against motorcycles, popularly known as okada, plying restricted routes within the state.
This is part of efforts to enhance public safety and mitigate traffic congestion.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, confirmed that the campaign would ensure motorcycle operations in specified restricted zones are halted in order to ensure public safety and optimise the city’s transportation network.
Osiyemi reminded residents that the ban on commercial motorcycles “remains in force in 10 local government areas and 15 local council development areas within the metropolis.”
He urged residents and commuters to refrain from using motorcycles on restricted routes, as the penalties for violations include, “three years in prison for both riders and passengers with their motorcycles impounded and publicly crushed in accordance with Section 46, sub-section 1, 2 & 3 of the Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.”
