The long awaited disclaimer of the purported third term bid by President Muhammadu Buhari took a new twist by his party the All Progressive Party (APC).
This is coming on the heels of media reports on suspected moves by the rulling party to amend the constitution to allow President Buhari run for a third term in office.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) while setting the records straight dismissed a suit which was filed by one Charles Enya, whom the APC described as a self-proclaimed member of the party; seeking an amendment to the 1999 Constitution to allow President Muhammadu Buhari run for a third term in office.
The APC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement yesterday said that the party had initially chosen to ignore Enya, but decided to publicly dissociate itself from trouble makers like Charles Enya and others.
Mr. Issa- Onilu added that, the president is very concerned about the future of the APC after his tenure and he is also worried about the sanctity of the constitution he vowed to uphold which spelt out term limit of every elected government official.
At the last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party, it was resolved and the statement reads “The party is, however, by this statement sending a strong signal to such other busybodies like Charles Enya who may be contemplating testing the resolve of our government on our mission to work for the best for our country to be ready to face the law.
“We would follow this new enemy of our country, who is most likely being sponsored by the desperate and misguided opposition, every step of the way, using all legal means to thwart his devilish efforts to create chaos in our country.
“As a party, we would not take kindly to anyone or group causing unnecessary distraction for this administration through anti-democratic actions. As a country, we are several years behind where we ought to be,” he added.
He went further to assure Nigerians that the APC led administration is working assiduously to revamp the economy, fight corruption, build infrastructures and provide the dividends of democracy.
“We have tried to find out the status of this character claiming to be a member of our party. If he turns out to be our member, we would ensure the party organ that has the responsibility to act on this matter promptly commence the process of expelling him,” he stated.
Issa-Onilu said APC as a progressive party would not tolerate anti-democratic forces and charlatans.
Prior to the 2015 General elections, insinuations of this nature were muted that the president had earlier promised to run for a single term but the APC debunked it as a rumor and went ahead to field President Muhammadu Buhari as their candidate in the election. He recorded victory eventually won.
