According to Russian media, the victim, Vladimir Popov, 23, was a Russian citizen.
Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada, Viktor Voropayev, told the country’s TASS news agency that the deadly attack happened on Thursday, June 8.
“A Russian died as a result of the shark attsck,” he said. He noted that Popov was not a tourist but had been living in Egypt for several months.
Pulse-pounding footage of the encounter shows hotel staffers screaming for swimmers to get out of the water as the shark’s fin can be seen approaching.
He can be seen desperately trying to swim towards the shore, but appears to be attacked by the shark while still in deeper waters.
