Returned Benin Bronze and Royal wooden stools returned from Germany in 2022 have now been relocated from the custody of the federal government to the benin palace in EDO State.
The historic ceremony witnessed the handing over by the Federal Government of Nigeria two looted artefacts to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, in Benin City the capital of EDO state.
The artefacts, bronze and wooden Royal Stools (Ekete), were initially kept in the custody of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) after being returned by Germany in 2022.
The Director-General of NCMM, Olugbile Holloway, presented the artefacts to the Benin monarch in his palace on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
According to historical records, the artefacts were made during the reign of Oba Eresoyen and Oba Esigie several centuries ago and were looted from the Oba’s Palace during the British punitive expedition in 1897.
Holloway pledged to work closely with the Benin Royal Court to uplift and display Edo heritage, stating that the Benin Bronzes and other artworks looted by colonial masters are gradually returning to Nigeria.
He assured that the Commission would collaborate with the Royal Court to create a fitting destination for people worldwide to appreciate the artworks.
Oba Ewuare II is grateful to the German Government, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the NCMM leadership for their efforts as displayed in his royal dance to Benin traditional music and offered prayers to Almighty God and his ancestors.
