The community of Ugep, headquarters of Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River State woke up to shocking news after a mother, identified as Mrs. Blessing Eno allegedly b3h3@ded her 11-month-old son.

Our correspondent gathered that the ugly incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, November 29, 2022, at Ibenda 2, Biko-Biko, Ugep.
Blessing, whom some alleged is suffering from Schizophrenia (Mental Disorder), was apprehended by her neighbours who almost lynched her after her 8-year-old son caught her washing off the toddler’s blood from the machete she used in committing the crime.
One of the neighbours said the suspect disclosed that she was promised one hundred thousand naira (N100,000) by an “invisible person.”
“Her 8-year-old son saw her washing off the baby’s blood from the machete she used to commit the act and started shouting.
“When we inquired from her the reason behind her action, she said she was told to do so by an invisible person (spirit), and that she will be rewarded with a hundred thousand naira when she is done with the task”, one of the neighbours said.
“The Police were hinted and immediately took custody of the woman, else, she could have been lynched by the angry mob”, the source added.

Reacting, the Obol Lopon of Ugep and Paramount Ruler of Yakurr LGA, HRM Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, who expressed shock over the tragic incident, called for calm in the community.
He assured the people that he was certain that the police will handle the matter professionally to a logical conclusion.
“I had to immediately convene a meeting with my subjects because even though what happened has desecrated the land, I had to ensure that further bloodshed was averted.
“We appealed directly to the young people in Ugep to tow the path of peace and rational thought in the face of this heinous crime, and they positively responded.
“We are in shock but we are calm and have left this matter in the hands of the police. I can assure you that there will be no reprisal action because we must remain law-abiding”, the Obol Lopon of Ugep said.
On her part, SP Irene Ugbo, Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO in Cross River State said it was a homicide case and the matter is being transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, CID Homicide Department for onward investigation.
Ugbo said: “I learned about the matter yesterday (Tuesday), and you know it’s a homicide case, it will be transferred from Ugep to the State CID, Homicide Department for further investigation.
“It is quite unfortunate and devastating. Already she is in protective custody, but the matter will surely be brought to Calabar”.
