Female workers under the Oyo State Government will begin to enjoy six months maternity leave, as the Government has adopted the WHO recommendation on exclusive breastfeeding and approved an upward review of maternity leave for pregnant women and nursing mothers in its employ.
The approval was given on Tuesday, during the State Executive Council meeting which held at the Executive Chamber of the Oyo State Governor’s Office, Agodi, Secretariat, Ibadan.
The decisions were relayed by members of the Council who briefed State House correspondents after the meeting.
Speaking, the Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Professor Daoud Sangodoyin said the government approved the maternity leave extension from four to six months because of the need to allow nursing mothers give better care and attention to their babies.
Sangodoyin, however, stated that the applications for the maternity leave were pegged at a maximum of four times for the duration of the service of the affected worker and the six months leave starts counting four weeks from the Expected Date of Delivery, EDD.
Giving further details, the Commissioner noted that, upon resumption from the leave, the female workers are to close at the usual 4pm with other workers and not 2pm as was the previous practice.
Also speaking, State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, disclosed that the state government has approved the sum of N3,280,568,572.34 for the completion of Idi Ape-Bashorun-Akobo-Odogbo Barracks Junction dualisation project.
