The Governor of Kogi State Mr. Yahaya Bello has challenged the Media to be upright in their reportage in the face of social media distribution that has largely taken away the core practice by genuine practitioners.

He was speaking at a gathering of media practitioners in the country on the occasion of the 29th edition of the Nigeria Media Merit Awards NMMA being held in Kogi State.

According to Governor Yahaya Bello in his welcome address said a truelly free and vibrant press is more important than the 3 arms of government; saying the world will be a darker place with political players and governance dispensers left to operate freely and unchecked by the media.

“The use of the tool of the pen has been used to pedal fake news in reportage causing dismay for thousands especially on platforms like Facebook; this must be averted.”

“The media must regulate itself within the ambit of the law in a responsible and ethical way necessitating professionals to stand and take back the true practice of journalism away from quacks who litter social media causing grave harm.

The NMMA provides an opportunity to produce sanity in the industry and encourage them to do more.

“We are indeed proud to partner with you to deliver and move forward the practice of the profession for the good of the country.

He also assured that he has given himself the task of discovering a greater nigeria as the great Flora Shaw saw it during the colonial era but in a new direction of prosperity in the present day
