The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says it has halted all National Identity Number (NIN) enrolment activities at its headquarters in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The move may not be unconnected to efforts being made to discourage large gatherings at the centre amid the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
NIMC Spokesman, Kayode Adegoke, disclosed the move in a statement Saturday night.
He stated that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, gave the directive.
According to Adegoke, the minister reactivated 20 other centres within the FCT to make the process of NIN enrolment much easier for applicants effective Monday, January 18, 2021.

The commission’s spokesman advised members of the public, residents and visitors to the FCT wishing to enroll for NIN to use any of the 20 NIMC centers.

The Federal Government through the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) had instructed telecommunications companies to deactivate telephone lines of subscribers who failed to link their phones to their NIN.
Subscribers with NIN have until January 19, 2021, as deadline to link their NIN with their SIM cards while subscribers without NIN have until February 9, 2021, to do so.
