Nigeria claimed their first win at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup (WWC), shocking Australia in Brisbane with a 3-2 comeback victory, putting the co-hosts’ chances of securing a fifth straight WWC knockout stage qualification in jeopardy.

Australia scored first through Emily van Egmond in a first half that saw 12 attempts on goal, but conceded just five minutes later thanks to Uchenna Kanu with the last kick of the half.
Nigeria took the lead in the 65th minute as Osinachi Ohale headed home bravely at the far post.
A mix up between Alanna Kennedy and Mackenzie Arnold then allowed star substitute Asisat Oshoala to tap home into an empty net, stunning the 49,000 fans into stunned silence.
Tony Gustavsson was slow to make changes, with Alex Chidiac not enetering the field until the 85th minute, she helped create some chances, and Australia did pull a goal back through Kennedy in the 10th minute of added time but it was mere consolation for the Matildas.
Australia will likely need to win against Canada – almost certainly without Sam Kerr – on Monday to qualify for the knockout rounds as they drop down to third place in Group B after tonight’s loss.
