Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State, northern Nigeria, has ordered the immediate closure of all boarding schools in four local government areas (LGAs) in the state following the abduction of school children at the Government Science College (GSC), Kagara.
Gunmen had attacked the school in the early hours of Wednesday and abducted yet-to-be-ascertained number of staff and students.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Bello gave an order to close boarding schools in Rafi, Munya, Mariga and Shiroro LGAs.
The governor, who met with heads of security agencies in the state at the Government House, said the action is necessary to save the life of the students as the areas have already been taken over by bandits.
He called for calm from parents and relatives of the abducted schoolchildren.
Bello assured them that “proactive action is underway” to resolve the situation.
Boarding schools have often been targeted by gunmen for attacks and abductions, with previous cases reported in Chibok in Borno state, Dapchi in Yobe state and Kankara in Katsina state.
