
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has been sworn in as 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). The ceremony was performed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Abuja.
President Tinubu who travelled to France on Monday, August 19, 2024, had to cut his trip short and arrive the country around 2:00 am to perform the swear-in.
Justice Kekere-Ekun took her Oaths at about 11:38 am.
Former CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on Thursday after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 at his investiture wanted to see a judicial system where the Supreme Court should not be over burdened with cases; saying the cases should have been concluded at the Appellate Courts.
He also spoke of the remuneration and hopes of justices after serving Their country for a long time should not be retiring g to a life of poverty and strife.
Present at the event were other Justices of the Supreme Court; the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio; leadership of the House of Representatives, represented by Prof Julius Ihonbvere; the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwoolu and the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ariwoola.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume; National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris were also present.
