Eleven persons were on Friday injured in a multiple road crash in the Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State while 41 persons were said to have escaped unhurt.

The accident which occurred around 2pm involved six vehicles with a total of 52 persons on board.

It was gathered that the cause of the crash was due to excessive speeding resulting into a loss of control, therefore leading to the accident.

An eyewitness said the victims were rescued by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps and rushed to hospitals in the area.

The state FRSC Sector Commander, Andrew Kumapayi, confirmed the incident.

He said, “A multiple and serious crash happened at Ihiala opposite St Anthony Catholic Church at 2pm today, January 1, 2021.

“The crash involved six vehicles. Fifty two persons were involved in the crash, which include 38 male adults and 14 female adults. Eleven persons sustained injuries and were taken to Obijackson Foundation and Lady of Lourdes hospitals respectively all in Ihiala for treatment by the FRSC rescue team.”

Also, a yet-to-be-identified woman lost her life in a road accident that occurred in Ikire, Osun State, while three other passengers, said to be children, were injured.

It was learnt that the accident, which involved a truck and a Toyota Corolla car, was caused by speed limit violation.

The Sector Public Education Officer of the Osun Command of the FRSC, Agnes Ogungbemi, said that the crash would have been averted if the vehicles were within speed limit.
