The six-time Ballon d’Or winner had gone three matches without a goal as he sat on 699 strikes for club and country. But it was always only a matter of little time before Messi breaks whatever deadlock.
Messi, who turned 33 on June 24, converted after 50 minutes to put his team 2-1 ahead against Diego Simeone’s side.
He is also La Liga’s all-time leading scorer, with 441 goals, and has scored 20 or more goals in league play in 12 straight seasons. While Juventus Forward Christiano Ronaldo is second all-time in La Liga history with 311 tallies.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the only current player other than Messi to have reached this 700 goal landmark, boasting 725 strikes in 1002 professional appearances.
