Several members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) are feared dead following a clash with the police in Emene, Enugu State.
Police officers reportedly invaded a building when IPOB members were holding a meeting on Sunday.
Shots were fired after the group resisted arrest. The casualty figure could not be ascertained.
It was learnt that the group allegedly gathered at St Patrick’s Community School compound along the old Abakaliki road to conduct a “combat training for new members.”
A source told The Guardian that two security officials died in the process.
A chieftain of IPOB Nzekwe Ugonna told the newspaper via telephone: “We have been meeting peacefully at the venue.”
He alleged that over 15 members of the group were arrested. “We have recovered three dead bodies and many sustained injuries while trying to escape from security men,” he said.
Enugu police spokesman Daniel Ndukwe could not be reached for comments.
IPOB was outlawed by the Federal Government in 2018.
