President Bola Tinubu has assured traders at the Karu market in the FCT gutted by fire on Thursday of his support to restore the market.
The source of the fire caused significant damage to goods and properties, and is still unknown .
A trader, who suffered substantial losses, appealed to the government for assistance, emphasising the devastating impact on her livelihood and family.
“Everything just got burnt. I don’t know where to start. This is where we feed from, pay rent and where I pay my children’s school fees from. It’s all gone. Over N20 million gone,” she told journalists.
This incident follows a similar fire at the Wuse market in March, which was reportedly sparked by protests related to a clash between FCT task force officials and traders.
Fire disasters like these have become common place in Nigerian markets raising fears of sabotage by unscrupulous people operating within the markets. Most recent incidents have been blamed on electricity sparks while others have been attributed to carelessness on the part of the shop owners.
