According to an announcement made by Sir Graham Brady, only one nomination was received by the 1922 Committee for the new leader of the party, and backed by 100 MPs.
Sir Brady, therefore, declared Sunak to be the next party leader, and consequently the new Prime Minister.
Recall that Liz Truss, former Prime minister, had resigned, saying she could no longer deliver the mandate on which she was elected by the conservative Party.
Rishi Sunak’s victory is seen by some as a victory for diversity and representation in British politics, which is overwhelmingly dominated by older white men.
He will be the UK’s first person of colour, first of Asian heritage and first Hindu to lead the country.
He was born in Southampton, an English port city, to Indian parents who had immigrated in the 1960s.
He will also be the youngest for more than 200 years at the age of 42.
