The head of the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID) in the Nigerian Police, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Joseph Egbunike, has been reported to have passed on after undergoing surgery to correct health issues that had affected his performance.

According to report, Egbunike, who had been recuperating faster than the medical experts had envisaged after the surgery, was scheduled to meet several formations under him, to re-strategies and adopt tactics that could further reduce crime across the country.
Some heads of the formations under him that were said to have been scheduled to meet with him on Tuesday include the Intelligence Response Team, (IRT).
The demise of the DIG was confirmed by one of his aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that the incident occurred when he was about to leave home as usual for the office.

It would be recalled that the deceased was the head of the investigative panel that probed the suspended IRT boss, Abba Kyari, over his link with the $1.1 million Qatari school fraud allegedly carried out by popular online celebrity, Rahmon Azeez popularly called Hushpuppi.
Egbunike holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) Accounting degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, as well as a Bachelor of Laws (LLB Hons. ), B.L., a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy (MILD), and a PhD in Criminology.
He has put in 33 years of service in the Nigeria Police Force and is currently the Deputy Inspector General of Police.
During his National Youth Service Corps, Joseph worked as an Account Bills Officer in the Group Accounts Division at NNPC Headquarters in Falomo (NYSC).
