“The most common way people give up their power is by thinking they don’t have any.”
— Alice Walker
This quote echoes through the streets of Nigeria today, where the conversations around elections have become a chorus of resignation. “INEC has concluded the polls.” “The system is rigged.” “There’s nothing we can do.” These are the new lullabies that put a sleeping giant back to bed.
But let’s be honest — it’s not just the rigging or the so-called ‘master strategist’ that has us where we are. It’s the millions of us who have surrendered our power without a fight. We rant in circles, mock our own hopes, and then bow to the altar of hopelessness.
If Nelson Mandela and the youth of South Africa had accepted the status quo, apartheid would still wear a crown. If Captain Thomas Sankara or Ibrahim Traoré had said “there’s nothing we can do,” Burkina Faso would still be on its knees. If the people of Senegal had folded their arms, they wouldn’t have broken free from the grip of recycled power.
So, Nigeria — the self-proclaimed Giant of Africa — what are we? Giants, or chickens? Have we become a nation of lily-livered, keyboard warriors afraid to rise?
We must stop waiting for saviors and start becoming the storm. Power isn’t taken by those who deserve it — it’s claimed by those who believe they already have it.
Stop saying “there’s nothing we can do.”
Start doing everything they think we can’t.
Sincerely,
Aliyu Bin Abbas
