At least 500 homes were fully or partially destroyed in several communities in Dambatta Local Government Area of Kano State, displacing thousands of families who now sleep in mosques and schools.
The flood which occurred last week after two consecutive heavy downpours affected some areas in Dambatta town, Gwauronnaje, Koren Dambatta, Maiganji and Gwarabjawa, among others.
The flooding was so widespread and devastating that the member of the Kano State House of Assembly representing Dambatta, Murtala Musa Kore, raised the issue at the Kano State House of Assembly. He urged the Kano State Government to direct the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide emergency assistance to the victims.
The flooding was aggravated in some areas by blocked drainages and building on low lying lands and the banks of streams seasonal such as in Gwauronnaje and Sansan villages.
