Gunmen on Tuesday killed 59 people in a raid on a herding village in northeast Nigeria’s Borno State.
The attack was made on remote village in the Gubio district of Borno state on Tuesday afternoon, killing dozens in the village, in what is believed to have been a reprisal attack, according to local reports.
Sources stated the Gunmen drove into remote Felo village in Gubio district in the early afternoon, shooting residents and running them over with their vehicles.
However No group has yet claimed the attack. Local reports stated that 59 bodies had been recovered, while Other source reported that 69 people were killed.
a local leader in the village said;
“We have lost 59 kinsmen in such a short time,”
They have been stealing livestock from the village, prompting residents to form a militia force to end the theft,
The vigilantes have been “hunting for the insurgents” in the bushes, killing some of them in gunfights”.
While it is unclear who carried out the attack, Locals believed the attack was from Fighters from an IS-linked jihadist group
The northeastern region of Nigeria Most especially Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa are highly susceptible and porous to attacks from Islamist militants, including Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa Province (ISWAP).
Though Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory; However attacks have been on the rise since June 2017.
