The death of George Floyd, an African American  man from Houston, occurred in Minneapolis on May 25, 2020, when Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis officer , knelt on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, with 2 minutes and 53 seconds of that occurring after Floyd was unresponsive.

Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on the road, while Chauvin had his knee on his neck. The three other arresting officers were identified as Thomas K. Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng.

The arrest was conducted after Floyd allegedly attempted to use a $20 bill, which an employee identified as counterfeit. Police alleged that Floyd “physically resisted” after being ordered to exit his vehicle before the video was filmed. Surveillance footage from a nearby restaurant however didn’t support the claim.

However the police officers were sacked following the death of floyd and now They are charged.

Hennepin County Prosecutor, Mike freeman claimed, Chauvin was charged with a third degree murder and an there’s an ongoing investigation concerning the other officers.

He stated:

“charged this case as quickly as evidence has been presented to us”.

“This is by far the fastest that we’ve ever charged a police officer,”

The Family of Gorge Floyd and their lawyer Benjamin Crump Made a statement concerning the death of Floyd; They said “the arrest is welcome but long overdue”

They also called for a more serious first degree murder charge and the arrest of other three officers involved.

Also The University of Minnesota announced that it would be limiting ties with the Minneapolis Police Department, and would no longer contract the local police department for assistance at major events. Three members of the  Minneapolis school board will present a resolution at its next meeting on June 2 proposing to terminate its relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department.
