Four nurses of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) have been placed in isolation following the care to a COVID-19 patient.
According to Authorities the isolation of the nurses has become necessary after their contacts with the 38-year old patient who is now dead.
The Lagos State government on Saturday announced the death of one COVID-19 patient at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health (Ayinke House) in Ikeja.
The woman had successfully delivered a baby at Alimosho General Hospital, Igando, Alimosho Local Government.
Reports, she developed a womb infection five days ago and was transferred to LASUTH for appropriate medical attention, but on arrival, the deceased was tested for coronavirus.
The result came positive and on Saturday, she was pronounced dead.
The deceased, before her death, was said to be battling with puerperal sepsis.
LASUTH Chief Medical Director, Prof Tokunboh Fabamwo, in an interview with journalists confirmed the isolation of the nurses.
The CMD alleged that a mistake from one of the nurses led the hospital to make its stance on the isolation.
Fabamwo said: “All the doctors took precautions when attending to the patient. When the woman was about to die and was gasping for breathe, the nurses rushed to her and tried to do pulmonary resuscitation on her.
“They moved more closely to her. Though, they were protected, we felt that because of that closeness, we should isolate them so that they won’t go home and be a risk to their families,” he added.
The patient’s corpse has since been evacuated while the deceased’s husband had his blood sample collected for COVID-19 test.
The results of the test are yet to be released, according to the LASUTH CMD who also announced that the hospital is establishing a tent, just a little distance away from the Emergency Centre where the hospital will run temperature tests.
