Members of the House of Representatives have rejected a Bill seeking to alter the Nigerian constitution to allow for a single term of six years for the president and governors.
The Bill, which also considered a six-year term for Members of the National Assembly and States Houses of Assembly, failed to scale second reading during plenary on Tuesday.
Majority of the lawmakers rejected the bill which was sponsored by Honourable John Dyegh from Benue State.
Honourable Dyegh, defending the Bill, said that it was necessary to for members of the National Assembly to gain more experience in six years instead of four.
According to him, re-election for the President and governors cost three times more than the first election and is characterised by violence.
He also projected that a single term of five years will curb the irregularities associated with re-election.
His colleagues, however, argued argued the Bill and turned it down.
