Control TV reported that a new political movement has been formed by a league of eminent Nigerian intellectuals, academics and activists in preparation for 2023.

The National Consultative Front was yesterday formed for the purpose of mobilizing Nigerians for a popular mass action towards political constitutional reforms that are citizen-driven and process-led in engendering a new peoples’ constitution.

Listed as members of the 30-member strong steering committee for the NCF include: Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Na’abba; former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Obadiah Mailafia; Olisa Agbakoba, SAN; Femi Falana SAN; Col. Abubakar Umar (retd.), Dr Oby Ezekwesili; Prof Jibo Ibrahim; Yabagi Sanni; Amb, Nkoyo Toyo, Isa Aremu, Prof Chidi Odinkalu, and Senator Shehu Sani.

Others include: Prof. Remi Sonaiya, Mallam Tanko Yinusa, Alhaji Shettima Yerima, Lady Funke Awolowo, Peter Ameh and Ogbeni Lanre Banjo, among others, Punch reports. It was proposed that the group will be unveiled to the public later this month.

The question a lot of people have begun to ask is if this political movement will have what it takes to defeat the two dominant parties we have in Nigeria: PDP and APC. There is no denying that these two parties are not different. In fact, a lot of APC members today defected from PDP and vice versa. Essentially then, both APC and PDP are siblings of a dysfunctional polity in Nigeria.

We definitely need a formidable alternative to these two parties. Unfortunately during the run-up to the 2019 general elections, we had a slew of new political parties in Nigeria. For the first time in the history of Nigeria, we had a lot of activists and professionals who ventured into politics contesting for presidency.

A lot of people had rightly pointed out that if Sowore, Kingsley Moghalu, Tope Fasua, Fela Dorotoye, Oby Ezekwesili, and the rest of the newbies had pulled all their resources together and formed a consensus, they would have had a better chance against the political establishment.

Nigerians are largely fed up with the political establishment. We crave new ideas; new people. We want candidates who embody integrity and people-oriented ideologies. The political establishment has milked Nigeria dry and left us with nothing but poverty, disease, insecurity, corruption, and unemployment. It’s time we looked for a credible third force. We hope that the National Consultative Front will turn out to be that for Nigerians.
