President Muhammadu Buhari is reported to have distanced himself from the announcement made by Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, national chairman of APC that the ruling party had settled for Senate President, Ahmed Lawan as consensus presidential candidate of the party. This is as Nigeria awaits the nomination of the the ruling party’s presidential flagbearer in the 2023 election.
Buhari debunked Adamu’s claim after a meeting with some governors of the ruling party from the north at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.
According to Vanguard, sources at the meeting stated that the President distanced himself from the alleged endorsement of Lawan by the APC’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
The President was reported to have told the governors that consultations should be broadened to ensure that a candidate with popular appeal emerges as the consensus candidate before the commencement of the Convention on Tuesday.
However, Adamu, in announcing Lawan as consensus candidate, he said he had met with President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue.
