Covid-19 Update: UNIVERSITIES, POLYTECHNICS AND COLLEGES OF EDUCATION TO OPERATE VIRTUALLY- ADAMU

The federal government say higher institutions across the country should commence alternative lecturing whereby lecturers would impart knowledge via virtual interaction with their respective students as a way of reducing the time being lost to the general lockdown occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic .

Minister of Education Mr. Adamu Adamu said this in a meeting on Thursday, with 237 Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts on how to reopen institutions of learning using virtual technology.

He directed all universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to activate virtual learning environment to enable students continue their studies through digital devices.

He said although the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is on strike, the government will do its best to resolve the labour crisis.

Most Vice Chancellors of private universities on their part embraced the idea and expressed readiness to reopen saying that they have top grade virtual learning system.

Mr. Adamu, who had a four hour teleconference with the Vice Chancellors and other heads of tertiary institutions from his home in Abuja, said the Federal Government, cannot afford to shut schools for a long period of time.

According to him, the meeting is aimed at finding a solution to the challenges posed to the nation’s school calendar by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Present at the meeting  are: the minister were the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed; the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, Dr. Masa’udu Adamu Kazaure; the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi; and the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, among others.
