The Senate on Thursday passed and adopted President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State through a voice vote.
In addition House of Representatives approved the emergency rule as the senate did. the House made the following key recommendations:
Establishment of a National Committee to mediate and restore peace in Rivers State.
The National Assembly should take over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly for the next six months.
This development follows President Tinubu’s Tuesday night broadcast, where he announced the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers, appointing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd.) as sole administrator of the state.
With the House of Representatives endorsing the proclamation, attention now shifts to the Senate, which must also approve the emergency rule for it to remain legally binding.
