Lebanese President Michel Aoun said a state of emergency should be declared in Beirut for two weeks after a massive explosion in the capital on Tuesday, and called for an emergency cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
Mr. Aoun, in remarks published on the Presidency Twitter account, said it was “unacceptable” that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored in a warehouse for six years without safety measures and vowed that those responsible would face the ”harshest punishments”.
Rescue workers are already searching for more than a hundred people who are missing after the massive explosion hit the port area of the city centre.
However, number of Casualties have not been ascertain yet but international media have put figure at 100 while the Lebanese red-cross says the death toll is above hundred while about 4000 injured
The entire city was shaken by the explosion and mushroom cloud could be seen spreading over the port area. With an impact felt about 240km away
The country will observe an official period of mourning for three days from Wednesday.
