Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has called on the Nigeria Police Force to immediately release the spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Ikanga Ugochinyere From its custody.

The arrest of the spokesman of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Barrister Ikenga Ugochinyere came after he was accused of allegedly collecting a bribe of $10 million from American billionaire, Bill Gates to pass the controversial Infectious Diseases into Nigeria.

The CUPP spokesman was arrested in-spite of the restraining order to the police by the Abuja Federal High Court on 4th of June, 2020.

Atiku, in a statement on Friday, Has reacted to these development, and called for the immediate release of Ugochinyere.

In a statement signed by Paul Ibe, spokesman to the Ex Vice President, on Friday, Atiku described the arrest as “tyrannical and inimical” to a constitutional order.

the statement read in part:

“This action is tyrannical and inimical to a constitutional order. We demand for his immediate and unconditional release,”

“The arrest of Ugochinyere, despite a subsisting court order, makes mockery of the rule of law, a necessary ingredient of a democracy. It is unacceptable to us and many Nigerians who value democracy and human rights”.

“Such action of the government at this time when our country is going through much stress and uncertainty, with citizen protests in some parts of the country, is not in anyone’s interest.

“Nigeria, despite all its shortcomings, remains and still looks forward to being referred to as a democracy. A democracy with respected human rights and the rule of law rather than impunity and brigandage.”
