Esther Agbaje, a 35-year-old Nigerian-American has won the Minnesota House of Representatives seat in the 2020 United States general election.
Agbaje, who will represent District 59B in the Minnesota House of Representatives on the platform of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFLP) defeated her closest rival, Alan Shilepsky, by a landslide.
She scored a total of 17,396 votes, which represents 74.6 per cent of the total votes cast.
Shilepsky scored 4,128 votes, representing 17.7 per cent of the total votes cast.
Chairman of the Nigerian in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Agbaje on her successful bid.
In the congratulatory message, the NIDCOM boss was excited that more Nigerians are showing their interest in impacting good governance in their countries of residence.
Dabiri-Erewa described her election as a testimony that Nigerians are capable of being trusted with the position of authority.
As a three-term lawmaker in the House of Representatives (2003 to 2015), Dabiri Erewa wished Agbaje “continued and unparalleled success”.
Agbaje, 35, who contested to represent District 59B in the Minnesota House of Representatives on the platform of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, an affiliate of the US Democratic Party, is a Nigerian-born American.
Her victory makes her the first Nigerian-American in the Minnesota legislature.
Recall that Oye Owolewa had also been elected as a shadow member of the United States House of Representatives from the District of Columbia. He is the first Nigerian-American to win a US Congressional seat.
