A family of 6 including a Mother have been rescued after a makeshift wooden bridge collapsed.
Eye witnesses say the wooden bridge gave in as a result of the sheer weight of the family on the bridge at that point.
Residents of Denro Ishashi in Ifo local government areas of Ogun State say their plight on the deplorable 8km road from ojodu Berger to Akute has been further compounded by the collapse of the major bridge over 10 years ago leaving them at the mercy of the flooded Ogun river every rainy season.
The residents association Chairman of Island Heritage Estate; one of over 15 estates in the area says the flooding occasioned by the release of water from the Ogun, Osun, and Nyos (cameroun) dams. Has spilled over several communities in the entire axis and has cut road access preventing residence from getting to work and children to schools.
An Exco member of the Island Heritage Estate Mr. Lanre Ajagbe told Control TV that the flooding has now become a yearly occurance unlike 10 years. This he says must be looked into by the present administration in Ogun State.
According to him “the past administration promised us for 8 years and nothing was done other than a few palliative. What Denro Ishashi road needs is a permanent solution. Government cant afford to look the other way anymore. The suffering is too much and the water last year lasted for 8 good weeks before it recedes.
Thank God Governor Abiodun has promised to look into border town roads between states. Let him make good his promise to the people of Denro”.
Control TV gathered that economic activities have been hampered as a result of the flooding of the area. The cost of transportation has double for the residence who now pay 100 Naira to cross the wooden bridge while going yo work and on returning home.
School busses are unable to cross the river that has taken over the access road adding more to their plight.
The 8km road that terminates at akute in Ifo has taken a huge toll according to resident of the area who say the government should act now and go beyond rhetoric as was the case in the previous administration.
Our Crew was further informed of the visit of the department of Public works of Ogun state last week. They say its not the first time measurements such as this were taken at the very same spot.
“All we want is for our road to be built to standards. Not what Former Governor Gbenga Daniel did that was washed away in a single rainy season. Contractors must be accountable and meet the required specifications so we dont come back after 1 or 2 years discussing Denro Road again”. Mr. Richard Omowhovo a resident in the area said.
