A 38-year-old mother Jennifer Connell has been charged with neglect of a dependent as Her infant son; Julian Connell, died at a hospital after the family dog attack the infant on a bed at their family home.
Jennifer Connell, 38, was arrested Tuesday and charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury.
Julian Connell died at a hospital after the January 25 attack on a bed at the family’s home, about 96 kilometres north of Indianapolis.
Following a six-month police investigation, the 38-year-old has been arrested and charged with three counts of neglect of a dependent.
Before attacking the infant, the pit bull was fighting with a second dog, a beagle mix, in the bedroom, police said. Connell’s teenage son removed the injured beagle from the room. He returned to find the pit bull covered in blood and standing over defenseless baby Julian.
Police were called to the scene and an officer was forced to shoot the aggressive dog in order to get it off Julian.
Jennifer Connell said she knew the dog was aggressive, and it had gone after the baby before. She also stated that she has been trying to find another home for the dog before the incident occurred.
Authorities said Connell’s home was filled with piles of dog faeces, decaying mice, cockroaches, and trash and had a ‘terrible odour’.
She remains in custody in Tippecanoe County Jail ahead of a preliminary court appearance.
