As part of its policy direction, the National Youth Alliance (NYA) is committing itself to deepening democracy and strengthening the foundations upon which Nigeria’s political landscape is built.
Ike Bishop Okoronkwo
Director, Policy Coordination & Central Delivery Coordination Unit it the youth based movement has promised to leave no stone unturned in advocating for electoral reforms aimed at birthing a new Nigeria.
While speaking to news men in Abuja on Tuesday, Bishop Okoronkwo in his words said:
A key pillar to achieving this is through substantive electoral reform. As it stands, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in its current structure and operations, lacks the capacity to conduct elections that genuinely reflect the will of the people. Without meaningful electoral reform, our democratic efforts will fall short, and the voices of Nigerian citizens will continue to be undermined.
Recognizing this urgent need, we are actively engaging with opposition lawmakers to explore legislative pathways for an electoral reform bill. Our strategy involves mobilizing mass public pressure to bring electoral reform to the floor of the National Assembly for debate and passage. This approach aims to highlight the demand for fair, transparent, and accountable elections, and to send a clear message to those in positions of authority that the Nigerian populace will no longer settle for subpar election standards.
For the NYA, leading this charge will not only demonstrate our commitment to democracy but also position the National Youth Alliance as a formidable voice for Accountability and Justice. Standing at the forefront of this electoral reform movement will solidify NYA’s reputation nationally, while also garnering international recognition as a youth-driven organization dedicated to democratic principles and social equity. Such positioning will be invaluable as we approach the 2027 general elections.
he opined.
Bishop Okoronkwo has asked all NYA members spread across 24 states it currently has with thousands of members to rally behind this initiative and to support ongoing efforts to advocate for electoral reform. He believes that by this, the Nigerian youths can pave the way for a new chapter in Nigeria’s democratic history—one defined by credible elections and genuine representation.
