The National Youth Alliance (NYA) is appalled and disappointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s address to the nation, which failed to acknowledge the fundamental issues driving the ongoing protests across Nigeria.
The President’s response demonstrates a clear disconnect from the harsh realities of hunger, economic hardship, and suffering faced by Nigerians.
Instead of addressing the root causes of the protests, the President chose to tout his administration’s achievements, which have only exacerbated the economic woes of the citizenry. The removal of fuel subsidies, touted as a necessary reform, has plunged millions of Nigerians into deeper poverty and hardship.
We question the President’s decision to maintain the fuel subsidy removal, despite its devastating impact on the economy and the people. This callous stance reeks of a narcissistic leadership style, prioritizing the interests of a privileged few over the well-being of the masses.
Furthermore, we condemn the excessive force employed by security agents against peaceful protesters, resulting in the loss of lives and injuries in Kano, Niger, Kaduna, Borno states, and the FCT. We demand an immediate investigation into these incidents and disciplinary actions against erring security personnel who violated rules of engagement.
The NYA stands in solidarity with Nigerians at this trying time, and we will continue to amplify their demands for a better life, economic justice, and accountable leadership. We urge the President to reconsider his stance on fuel subsidies and engage in genuine dialogue with the people to address the pressing issues facing our nation.
