The University of Benin has declared Tuesday, April 4 as a lecture free day over the brutal murder of a final year student at the institution’s campus on Monday night.

The final year student of the Department of Public Administration, Desmond Rukevwe Obukhowo, popularly known as Mayor on campus was shot on the face at close range around 9pm on Monday.
The late Obukhowo was also the Chief of Kegites formerly known as Palm Wine Drinkers Association on the campus.
The Public Relations Officer of the institution, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, said in a statement on Monday that the school is making efforts to investigate the dastardly act.
She appealed the members of the community to remain calm assuring that intensified efforts are being made for security in the jolted campus.
“Tuesday 4th April, 2023, has been declared lecture – free by the Management of the University of Benin following the traumatic murder incident which occurred at the University’s campus on Monday night.
“The Management further appeals to members of the University community to remain calm as efforts are being intensified to ensure the safety of staff and students while security agencies are investigating the sad incident.
“Management again prays God to comfort family and colleagues of the deceased and to grant his soul peaceful rest.” She said.
