The incident which occurred in the Olawuwo area of Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State capital caused panic in the area.
Witnesses say the two persons who were police officers were hit while on a motorcycle by a tipper lorry at a turning point around Olawuwo.
The driver was said to have absconded after the incident for fear of being lynched by angry mob while others claimed he (the driver) must have been drunk after driving off his lane to run over the victims (policemen) who were said to be heading to work.
Some of the witnesses who to our correspondent said the incident could have been averted if only the lane which is currently under repair along the road had been completed on time.
They said the U-turn point where vehicles from Ado Ekiti cross over to the other lane from Iworoko has always appeared dangerous to motorists with a call on the state government to expedite the rehabilitation of the road so as to prevent further carnages.
Meanwhile, the two police officers involved in the accident have been reportedly taken to the morgue at the state teaching hospital in Ado Ekiti.
