The Former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu seem to have his work cut out for him as Prison authorities have declined to set him free from the Kuje Correctional Centre despite the Supreme Court judgment which nullified his conviction by a Federal High Court.
The apex court nullified his conviction for alleged N7.61 billion fraud last Friday.
The Nimbus Cover closed in on him Kalu in December 2019 when he was sentenced to 12 years in imprisonment by the Federal High Court.
Nigeria’s Anti graft agency the The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) rolled out it’s arsenals on the pronouncement of the courts stipulating that a retrial be done. Efcc said it has overwhelming evidence to convict the former Governor now senator.
National tabloid: THE NATION, said a copy of the judgment obtained showed the court did not order Kalu’s release from custody saying that he (Kalu)did not file any application for his release.
The judgment only covers the Appellant, Mr. Ude Jones Udeogu, who challenged the propriety of a Court of Appeal Judge, Justice Mohammed Idris to try him.
The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Correctional Service, Mr. Jaafar Ahmed, has also declined to release Kalu because there was no order from the Supreme Court to do so.
