The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) have threatened to withdraw their services across the country if President Muhammadu Buhari doesn’t produce security agents who attacked harmless protesters at the Lekki toll gate.
In a statement signed by its President and General Secretary, Festus Osifo and Lumumba Okugbawa on Wednesday, PENGASSAN said shooting of peaceful #endsars protesters at Lekki toll plaza and all over the country falls short of any standards of civilization globally more so at peaceful protesters in a democracy.
Nigerian oil workers call on president Buhari to provide adequate security for the protesters in line with democratic norms and to immediately produce the perpetrators.
It’s statement reads in part:
“Failure of which we will convene an emergency meeting of our National Executive Council (NEC) to review the happenings in the Nation with the view of withdrawing our services Nationwide,”
“Our hearts bleed for innocent Nigerians who lost their lives or got injured in this senseless and inhumane action of the armed security agents of the government,”
“To unleash this level of cruelty on peaceful and harmless protesters who were holding the National flag, singing the National anthem in demonstration of their belief in the course of the country by killing and injuring them is highly condemnable,”
Nigeria, gets over 80 percent of its foreign exchange from oil exports, and struggles from the impact of covid 19 which has further plunged the country deep into recession with plummetting revenue from crude sales.
Nigeria is the only oil producing country without functning refineries making it rely heavily on importation of petroleum products.
