Nigeria’s former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan will lead a team of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) envoys to Mali for talks following the coup that took place in the country.
The leaders are expected to arrive in the West African country on Saturday.
President Keita was overthrown on Tuesday by mutinying troops, who took him, Mali’s Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, as well as other senior government officials into custody.
The coup, however, was condemned by the African Union, the European Union, and the United Nations, among others.
ECOWAS the 15-nation Economic Community of West African States on Thursday had announced it would dispatch a high-level delegation “to ensure the immediate return of constitutional order”.
It also demanded Keita be restored as president and warned the junta that it bore “responsibility for the safety and security” of the detainees.
However, Speaking on the safety of the Envoys sent to Mail AFP quoted a junta official in the country saying “We will receive the ECOWAS delegation with pleasure… it is important to talk to our brothers,” .
