The Federal government has announced the enrollment of 86,000 beneficiaries into the conditional cash transfer programme in six Local government areas in Zamfara state.
National Coordinator of the program Dr. Temitope Sinkaiye said this at the ongoing 3-days training of local facilitators on savings and Group Mobilisation of the programme in Gusau, the state capital.
The conditional cash transfer program is one of the Social Investment S.I.P component initiated by President Muhammadu Buhari to get people out of extreme poverty.
The National Communications Officer Henry Ayede who represented Mr. Sekaiye listed the benefiting Local government areas Anka, Bungudu, Birnin-Magaji, Kaura-Namoda, Tsafe and Talata-Mafara.
In his words, “Apart from the 86,000 beneficiaries, we also have additional data of 20,000 registered to be enrolled into the programme making our beneficiaries to be over 100,000 in Zamfara”.
“We have so far enrolled over 700,000 beneficiaries across the 29 states and Zamfara have the highest number of beneficiaries across the country”.
“We are here for enrolment training of 102 local government facilitators on Saving and Group Mobilisation” .
“This training became necessary, because it is expected for every beneficiary of this programme to be saving.
“We realised that giving the beneficiaries N5,000 monthly is not enough to pull them out of poverty except if we train them on behavioural change,’’ “We want our beneficiaries to imbibe the culture of saving so that they would be forming groups in form of either contributions or cooperatives,”.
The programme aims to reduce over 5 million most vulnerable and poor people in Nigeria who fall below absolute poverty lines.
