Speaker of the Lagos States House Of assembly , Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has joined his counterparts from across the world in celebration of the World Parliament Day marked yearly on June 30.
The day fell on a Sunday which prompted the Speaker to shift the World Parliament Day as marked yearly by the United Nations.
At plenary today the Speaker harped on the need to see the legislative arm of government as part and parcel of the structure of governance saying it is not a sub tier of the executive or judicial arm of government in a democracy.
Obasa in that trajectory advocates equal importance be given by newsmen in the reportage of the executive the judiciary and the legislature; describing his arm of government as the engine of a Rolls Royce that powers the exterior elegance seen by all and must be accorded its due recognition and importance.
Speaker Obasa also raised a motion to recognize past speakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly with monuments, buildings and streets named after them in recognition of the contribution they have made to the entrenchment of democracy and growth of Lagos state; a feet currently enjoyed by Governors.
The motion was seconded by Hon. Olushola Desmond Elliot of Surulere Constituency 1 and two other lawmakers in the hollowed chambers before the i’ had it in a vote.
The Honorable Speaker who has transformed the face of the Lagos assembly’s leadership including the physical environment and assembly edifice in Alausa; received the nod of the assembly in its commitment to serve the people of Lagos state more; exemplified by settlement of disputes arising from land ownership between communities and other matters.
Many believe that this further gives growing confidence in the assembly by the people of Lagos State and the Speaker in justly settling matters brought before it.
The house has gone on recess to resume on the July 8, 2024.
