The executive Governor of Kano state
Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje has announced the commencement of deportation of Almajiris (child-street beggars) to their home States.
In a statement signed by the Governor and made available through his media aid Salihu Yakasai, the action is to curtail the rapid spread of Corona virus in Kano state and to eliminate the risk of covid-19 infection on the vulnerable Almajiris.
Kano State government on Sunday approved the deportation of all ‘children beggars’ in the State.
The governor had said the decision was made to fully consolidate the free and compulsory primary and secondary school education which it has rolled out.
The statement reads in Part:
“H.E @GovUmarGanduje has today, disclosed that his government has begun the deportation of Almajiris in Kano back to their home towns and states.
“This is in order to reduce the risk of exposing them to Coronavirus and related hardship from the lockdown that will further affect them,” he tweeted.
Kano state now has 37 cases of COVID-19. It will be recalled that prior to the corona virus outbreak, the governor of Kaduna state Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai had made public calls on his counterparts in the North to take the issue of street begging seriously; although it was viewed as an anti people strategy.
He had told his counterparts how the almajiri system was anti Islam and also that the north has become a laughing stock in the country.
